The Unicorn
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn
There was green alligators and long-necked geeseThe Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn
And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo,
and take some of those
Green alligators and long-necked geeseOld Noah was there to answer the call
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
Don't you forget My unicorns
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
Hey Lord,
I've got green alligators and long-necked geeseAnd Noah looked out through the driving rain
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't find no unicorns"
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
Oh, them silly unicorns
There was green alligators and long-necked geeseThe ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can't wait for no unicorns"
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day
You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorns.

My husband has a thing for unicorns. I don't really know why or what started it, but we've got random unicorn items around this house- mostly in the basement- surrounding his "work station." I am always thrifting, and I recently found a cool vintage pendant necklace that I couldn't pass up simply because I wanted to show it to him. Of course he's never going to wear it, so I am thinking that I just might put it in my Etsy shop. I am still holding off for some weird reason... It honestly isn't something I would ever wear, but I know someone else out there must have a thing for unicorns too...
I only love the Shel Silverstein poem copied above. It reminds me of my sister. I think she knows the whole thing by heart. Okay, I listed it. It is officially for sale. The husband's response? "You are selling that?! For $23?! It should be a hundred and twenty three dollars! Well that is going to be one lucky person..."

nice post, I used to collect unicorns as a teenager and still have most of my collection. I am unable to part with them even though I no longer display them. they were real big in the 80's. In fact, I'm sure I have the earrings to match that necklace... haha. has your husband seen the animated movie "the last unicorn"?
ReplyDeleteYou know, after you first told me Aaron had a unicorn obsession, I got a birthday card for him from the Leaning Tree (remember when I temped there?) with a big unicorn on it. Of course I forgot to give it to him, for about five birthdays in a row. One of these days I will remember.
ReplyDeleteJaime: Yes! He has seen this movie. He mentioned it after reading my post. He also wants to buy all of the art I posted.
ReplyDeleteBess: You mentioned this so-called card a long time ago.... I wonder if it really exists.
LOVE Shel Silverstein. awww I can't believe your selling your hubby's unicorns! They'll make someone else very happy, I'm sure!
