summer reading list

I have a lot of reading to do this summer to prepare for next year's classes. Below are all of the books I'll be teaching, some of which I've never read! This is a pre-existing school list. I'm not able to make any changes for next year. Not so sure about Ayn Rand... But other than that, I'm excited! Fortunately, I've taught a few of them before. The final set of books is not for teaching. I just want to mix in some "fun books" as well. Most of them are young adult literature.

For school:
Anthem by Ayn Rand (never read)
Antigone by Sophocles
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (never read)
........................................
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
Outliers by Malcom Gladwell (never read)
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

For fun:
Rules of Civility by Amor Towles
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
Bang by Sharon Flake

  1. This looks like a fun list. I've been so bad at reading during the last couple of months. I don't know why! I have the time in the evenings. I just veg out watching junk on TV instead (although I just finished watching the latest season of the BBC's Sherlock on my iPad, and that was definitely NOT junk!) Still, I want to do better at reading.

A lot of books on your list I've read fairly recently (last 2 years) and I enjoyed all of them. Anthem and Outliers may be the only ones I haven't read. I DID read something by Gladwell last year though and was unimpressed. Pop psychology. Bleh.

I'm jealous that you have a list. That's a start.

  2. Yes, it's a good list. Some favorites of mine are on the list (Eyes were watching God, Part-time Indian, and Rules of Civility, Mockingbird) and I've read most of them. And now my music lesson question was answered!
